The Future of Hydrogen Powered Cars

Car manufacturers expect that they will be able to begin mass-producing hydrogen powered cars within the next decade. Researchers are confident that they will have similar power to traditional cars using fossil fuels, but warn that they will probably have to be refueled more often. Although the technology is still cost prohibitive for the average car buyer, industry experts predict that as the technological advances continue and an infrastructure is put in place, the falling prices of these cars, as well as their environmental appeal, will lead many consumers to look into purchasing hydrogen fueled vehicles.

A practical problem still to be resolved is how vehicles will fill up their storage tanks. While we have a gas station on every corner, the development of a network of hydrogen refueling stations is a long way off, and the lack of this resource presents a logistical problem barring the practical success of this technology. In the interest of environment safety and a decreased reliance on Middle Eastern oil, governments are encouraging the development of an infrastructure that could support this advance. President Bush and Governor Schwarzenegger of California have both committed research funds to this cause.
