Fuel Cells Today - Mirant Adopts PES Hydrogen Generator at MI Power PlantWallingford, CT-based Proton Energy Systems (PES) recently announced that Mirant Corporation has successfully installed a PES HOGEN H Series hydrogen generator at its power plant in Zeeland, MI.
Before installing the PES hydrogen generator, PES said the Mirant-Zeeland facility paid between $30,000 and $60,000 per year to have four to six cylinders delivered each day to help cool the plant's three electric generators, which require approximately 70 standard cubic feet per hour (scfh) of pure hydrogen gas.
"We have a small staff, 12 operators," said Mirant-Zeeland plant operations and maintenance manager Brian Roth. "This equipment saves them time and helps them focus on more productive tasks."
PES said the H Series generator at the Mirant-Zeeland plant provides 192 scfh of 99.999-percent pure hydrogen gas. The company noted that its H Series hydrogen generators typically provide a 60- to 90-percent savings on power plants' hydrogen operating costs compared to deliveries of cylinder or tube-based hydrogen.
