Fuel Cells Today - Danish Renewable Energy Center to Display Hydrogen Vehicle

Hydrogen vehicle publication H2CarsBiz recently reported that the Folkecenter for Renewable Energy in Denmark will display a Ford Motor Company Focus sedan converted to run on hydrogen gas later this week in Jutland.

The center said hydrogen fuel for the vehicle is supplied from a "decentralized" hydrogen production system that features a 75-kilowatt (kW) wind turbine paired with a 20-kW electrolysis plant. Additionally, the system includes a hydrogen fuel storage tank and a dispenser to fuel the vehicle, which is powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine converted to run on pressurized hydrogen.

"The converted Ford Focus...fulfills all expectations regarding performance and economy," said Folkecenter managing director Preben Maegaard.

H2CarsBiz said the vehicle's 2,900 pounds-per-square-inch (psi) onboard hydrogen storage system can hold up to 23 gallons of fuel. The publication noted that car consumed approximately 58 gallons of compressed hydrogen during a 25-kilometer test drive at an average speed of 110 kilometers per hour.
