Fuel Cells Today - Proton Receives Additional Funding for Hydrogen Filling StationProton Energy Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corporation, recently announced that the company has received a third award, valued at $1.9 million, from the University of Nevada Las Vegas Research Foundation (UNLVRF) to continue its development of a hydrogen fueling station.
According to Proton, this third phase, funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), allows Proton and UNLVRF to continue collaboration that began in 2003 to develop advanced hydrogen fueling technologies.
Proton said the fueling station's design is expected to incorporate a high-capacity electrolyzer, capable of generating up to 12 kilograms per day of hydrogen. The electrolyzer will also incorporate higher-pressure capability, enabling the reduction of the downstream compression required to store high-pressure hydrogen onboard a vehicle.
Proton noted that the fueling station will be located at the Las Vegas Valley water district. Technological investigations will take place at both the water district and at Proton's facilities in Connecticut.
The R&D project will also seek to add natural gas blending capability for compressed natural gas vehicles, which already exist in Las Vegas.
