Fuel Cells Today - Local ME Company, Group Plan New Hydrogen Production PlantsLocal Maine newspaper the Portland Press Herald recently reported that Auburn, ME-based gases and welding products supplier Maine Oxy has revealed plans to develop by as early as next year a new $500,000 hydrogen production facility that would provide the alternative fuel for use by such commercial customers as delivery vehicle fleets.
According to the newspaper, Maine Oxy CEO Bruce Albiston said the company plans to purchase an electrolyzer to produce the hydrogen. While the majority of power for the electrolyzer is expected to derive from the utility grid, Albiston said supplemental solar panels could help deliver 20 percent of the facility's power needs.
The Press Herald also noted that Portland, ME-based advocacy group the Hydrogen Energy Center has revealed it is examining the feasibility of producing hydrogen via grid-sourced hydropower and on-site solar panels for use by the city's Metro bus system. The center looks to reach a decision on the facility by the summer of 2006.
