Information on hydrogen electrolyzers

Hydrogen is widely seen as a major source of future energy. There is no shortage of hydrogen in the world, but all of it exists in compound with other elements. This means that the method of extracting hydrogen becomes an important problem to be solved. The current industrial demand for hydrogen is met by using natural gas and a process called steam reforming, and some researchers are working on ways to use an onboard catalyst to manufacture hydrogen in the vehicle. This does produce carbon dioxide and other undesirable gases.

There is, however, a pollution free source of hydrogen: water. Electrolysis uses an electric current to separate the hydrogen atoms from the oxygen atoms and produces no by products that can harm the environment. The device that makes this process possible is called a hydrogen electrolyzer. The first generation of hydrogen electrolyzers is now available for home use, camping, etcetera, and versions for automotive and industrial use are being developed.

The major problem in their design is the amount of electricity they use, electricity that somehow needs to be generated. Some scientists are even looking at ways for algae or bacteria to use sunlight to break water into hydrogen and oxygen. This site offers articles on all aspects of hydrogen power, it's possibilities and problems.

Fuel cell, or hydrogen powered cars are widely seen as the main use for hydrogen in the future. See our main article for more information on Hydrogen Powered Cars.
